With the support of DelfinGroup, the Child and Adolescent Resource Centre (CARC) implemented a project aimed at introducing evidence-based behavioural therapy approaches for the treatment of chronic tics and Tourette syndrome in Latvia.

As part of the project, 24 specialists from CARC regional branches and two specialists from the Children’s Clinical University Hospital received specialised training in the Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT). This marked the first introduction of this therapeutic approach in Latvia and expanded access to specialised, evidence-based support for children and adolescents with chronic tics and Tourette syndrome.

The training was delivered by internationally recognised experts Dr Tara Murphy from the United Kingdom and Jolande van de Griendt from the Netherlands. Specialists learned practical behavioural therapy approaches, including CBIT, Habit Reversal Training (HRT), and exposure-based techniques, which can help reduce and manage tics and their impact on everyday life.

Following the training, CARC specialists began applying the newly acquired methods in their work with children and adolescents.

The project also focused on raising awareness and reducing stigma associated with tics and Tourette syndrome. In cooperation with international and Latvian experts, educational materials were developed for young people, parents, teachers, and professionals, providing accessible information about tics, available treatment approaches, and appropriate support.

The project strengthened professional capacity in Latvia and expanded the range of evidence-based support available to children and adolescents with chronic tics and Tourette syndrome and their families.
